Biometric Identification: Iris Recognition

Ever wondered how does the Iris Recognition work, how accurate it is and what makes it stand out from other Bio metric Identifications? Well we are going to discuss this today, so let’s just jump right into it But First Note that Iris Recognition is not the same as Retinal Recognition as retinal scanning is the ocular-based Bio-metric technology that matches unique pattern of an individual’s retina blood vessels.

Iris Recognition:

Being one of the most reliable Biometric Identification the Iris Recognition is used in many Applications, Such as Document Security Systems , Access control, Registration and Sign in and many more security or identification purposes. It’s important to know that what part of an eye is the iris, below is the image showing what part exactly is Iris in the eye. (The colored part)

Features:

The Iris has its own unique features among all the other biometric identifications such as Fingerprint Recognition, Retinal Scanning, Face recognition, Hand geometry biometrics and Signature which is the reason of its appreciation and it is due to these unique features Iris Recognition is used in many imperative situations as a reliable security solution. Some of the features are mentioned below:

  • The Iris is a highly protected organ of the human body yet clearly visible
  • You cannot lose it as long as you live so no worries about forgetting your credentials
  • Very fast process of Recognition
  • Glasses or lenses don’t interfere
  • Very unique Iris pattern for every individual
  • Doesn’t change with aging or time
  • Very high Accuracy
  • Can be seen from some distance

How it Works:

We now know the features that are the reason for this technique to be so useful and reliable, the next question is how does it work?

Mathematical pattern-recognition techniques are applied to the images of the irises of an individual’s eyes to make this biometric system work flawlessly.

Since every individual has a unique Iris pattern it is very secure, easy and super-fast method to identify a person.

Unlike fingerprints that can be hard to recognize under some given circumstances (Like manual labor) The Iris remains unchanged throughout your life and is protected by the Cornea, a highly transparent and sensitive membrane.

Due to its nature it can also be used as a Continuous Identification System in document security as a person’s Iris can be continuously monitored as he/she is viewing the document, also if any other Iris is scanned prying eyes on that doc we can instantly deny access or send an alert. This comes very handy when dealing with confidential info.

History:

The Iris Recognition algorithms were first patented and developed by John Gustav Daugman who is a British-American professor of computer vision and pattern recognition at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

Although the concept was discovered way back in history for e.g. in 1953 F.H. Adler wrote: "In fact, the markings of the iris are so distinctive that it has been proposed to use photographs as a means of identification, instead of fingerprints."

In 1949 a British ophthalmologist J.H. Doggart, Wrote: “Just as every human being has different fingerprints, so does the minute architecture of the iris exhibit variations in every subject examined. Represent a series of variable factors whose conceivable permutations and combinations are almost infinite."

Conclusion:

Finally we conclude that Iris Recognition is indeed a very trustworthy way of identification which has its perks and advantages over other Bio metric Identification systems and that’s why it is used on many platforms and is considered highly reliable and agile.
